There have been quite a lot of changes since February!

The 3rd meeting took place online, rather than in Aberdeen. As everybody is aware the UK is currently practicing social distancing, and for the foreseeable future the group will not be meeting in person to protect everybody’s health.

Understandably, we took the time on the 19th of March to talk about these changes and discuss how we can take things forward.

Recognising that everybody is a bit anxious these days we started with a chair yoga session. You can find the chair yoga session on the Instagram page for the group (@papoulastaf).

What did we discuss?

How do we go forward?

  • The monthly meetings will still take place on the specified dates, but instead of meeting in person we will catch up using Zoom. The next session is on the 23rd of April, at 3 pm.
  • In between meetings we will stay in touch using email and phone. Importantly, these emails will be more task-oriented asking you to contribute your thoughts.
  • Regular updates will be posted Instagram page @papoulastaf

What can an organisation do?

In February we asked ourselves what an individual can do build good relationships. It helped to think about them in the categories of: skills, values and behaviours. Or in another way: What should an individual know? What values should guide them? What should an individual do?

But, of course, it is not just up to the individual. Organisations have a big influence on the environment and the behaviours of individuals.

The questions we have asked ourselves are:

  • How can an organisation recruit the right people?
  • How do you make sure that the people with the heart in the right place do not get burned-out?
  • How do you train people to have the right skills?
  • What policies do you need that allow the right behaviour?
  • How can an organisation empower individuals to build strong relationships?

What’s next?

The next meeting is on the 23rd of April and will take place on Zoom. Zoom is an online platform where you can do group video calls. Instructions for Zoom will be send via email closer to the date. The meeting will start at 3 pm and last until 4:30 pm.

We will continue talking about the question:

What can the organisation do to create environments where relationships grow?

As always, please get in touch if you want to add anything to this. You can reach me on email ([email protected]), phone (01414657520) or on Twitter (@Papoulapr).

‘Building Relationships' is a Staf project focused on improving relationship-based practice across Scotland, funded by The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. The project's initial phase, 'Mapping Relationship' was completed in 2019 and involved extensive consultation in person, in workshops, online and at our focus groups. You can find out more about the background to the project here
