This week the Staf/CYCJ Youth Justice Voices project got underway with the first info session at our offices in Glasgow – putting young people in the driving seat in more than one way!

This informal event was an opportunity for young people aged 16-25 with experience of both the care and the criminal justice system to connect and hear about Staf and CYCJ’s new, exciting participation project.

We hosted the ultimate games night where teams got to know each other as they competed in a range of challenges with our very own Grand Prix finale.

There were a few “fuel stops” along the way as the steering group agreed on where and when their next meeting will take place and what social and creative activities they want to try next.

We were delighted that everyone wanted to join and the group decided on fortnightly meetings which will be held in central Scotland. They were keen to try new things, learn new skills and to combine meetings with social activities.

Joining the steering group is a great opportunity for young people to exercise their participation rights as they will shape and lead the work of the project. They will have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities of their choice which will enable them to creatively share their experiences.

The group will also be supported to develop and devise activities which will help us to capture the views of their peers. Staf and CYCJ see this as a real opportunity for change as we will work to ensure that care experienced voices are amplified in the justice system and heard by policymakers, managers and the Scottish Government.

Our next session will take place on Monday 15 April between 5pm and 6.30pm (venue to be confirmed). This opportunity is open to care and justice experienced young people aged 16-25 across Scotland. We are currently looking for new steering group members to join in and make their voice heard.

If you want to help drive change in our care and justice systems then get involved!

We would encourage any young people interested in joining the project to contact out Youth Justice Participation Worker, Ruth, for more information. Travel expenses will be covered and young people are more than welcome to bring a worker.
