Jo Derrick, CEO of care leaver charity Staf, has today welcomed the appointment of Fiona Duncan as chair of the Promise Oversight Board, which will provide oversight to the implementation of the Care Review

While the appointment has been made amidst the COVID-19 crisis, Jo Derrick has urged the Scottish Government to ensure that there will be “no loss of momentum”.

A Staf report published earlier this month found that the current crisis has shone a new light on the issues faced by young people leaving care – underlining the need to deliver the Care Review and build back better.

Welcoming the appointment, Staf CEO Jo Derrick said:

“I want to congratulate Fiona Duncan on her appointment as chair of the Promise Oversight Board – her passion, experience and commitment make her an excellent choice.

“Staf looks forward to working with Fiona and the Scottish Government to ensure that, while there will be an understandable impact on the timetable, there will be no loss of momentum.

“The COVID-19 crisis has shone a bright light on many of the issues young people leaving care continue to face, despite all of the hard work, care and love of those who support them.

“We need to ensure that as we work to create a better future, we do not lose sight of the challenges our young people face today.

“Now more than ever we need to deliver on the promises made – there cannot be a return to normal, we must build back better.”
